Exploring the Amalfi Coast with a private driver
If you are planning a trip to the Amalfi Coast in Italy then we highly recommend picking Sorrento, or someplace on the Sorrentine Peninsula, to stay with your family or group of friends. This seaside town is a fantastic location for enjoying the area, with wonderful squares and walks, lots of delicious restaurants and lively bars, and it is all permeated with an old world charm. You will certainly be well taken care of in one of the many luxury hotels or can go the more independent route with an apartment or villa from one of the many booking sites.
Don’t make this mistake when staying in Sorrento
When staying in Sorrento, one mistake people make is thinking that because they are fairly close to the Amalfi Coast and Pompeii that using public transportation is a good option. Unfortunately, after deciding to risk the train or brave the bus, we have gotten many calls from individuals stuck in a small town with no bus in sight. It isn’t worth wasting a day of your precious vacation time trying to figure out the complicated bus schedules or missing the last train back from Pompeii.
Choose a day of relaxation and fun with panoramic views
A much better option for seeing the top sites is from the comfort of a luxury minivan with cushy seating, panoramic windows and the air conditioning up as high as you like. The upside to having a private excursion from your hotel in Sorrento is that you will be picked up directly at your accommodation, so there will be no need to wander around trying to find a specific pick up site. If you use our services, you will also have an English-speaking driver who is from the Sorrento area. He will show you his favorite local spots and have plenty of stories to tell you about what it is like to live on this stunning coastline.
Another big advantage: the minivan is yours for the day! You can either have a predetermined itinerary, if you know ahead of time what you want to see, or you can have the driver pull over and wait for you as you explore every time you see something that looks cool. The driver can stop at a roadside stand so you can buy the huge local lemons or a bottle of the local limoncello liqueur. He can pull off at any of the overlooks so you can get some amazing photos, and of course take you to all the best towns like Positano, Ravello and Amalfi without you having to worry about finding a parking spot. Our drivers are also great with kids. They know when to suggest a gelato stop to keep the troops happy!
Taking the ferry to Capri or Ischia
The only public transport that makes any sense from Sorrento is the ferry, which is fun to take to one of the gorgeous little islands right off the coast. The two most popular islands are Capri and Ischia. Be sure to check the ferry schedule ahead of time and skip the days where the sea is rough as the ferryboats can be cancelled. The high-speed ferry from Sorrento only takes 20 minutes to get to Capri and one hour to get to Ischia. Capri is known for elegant shopping and amazing views and of course the blue grotto caves. Ischia is instead known for relaxing thermal baths. Our favorite thermal park on the island is Negombo, which has really unique thermal pools as well as beautiful landscaping with all kinds of exotic plants.
